Position Overview

Astute Business Solutions is seeking an experienced, hands-on Senior Oracle WebLogic / Java Upgrade Consultant to lead and execute an enterprise Oracle WebLogic Server upgrade from 12.2.1.4 to 14.1.1.

The customer environment includes Oracle E-Business Suite (EBS), custom Java/J2EE applications, WebLogic middleware, databases, integrations, and third-party application components.

This position requires considerably more than traditional WebLogic administration. The successful candidate must have strong experience with WebLogic upgrades, Java/JDK compatibility, custom Java application remediation, Oracle EBS technology architecture, application deployments, integrations, and production troubleshooting.

The consultant will assess the current environment, develop the upgrade strategy, perform the WebLogic upgrade, identify Java and application compatibility issues, work with development and infrastructure teams to remediate problems, and support testing and production cutover.

Key Responsibilities

Lead the upgrade of Oracle WebLogic Server 12.2.1.4 to WebLogic Server 14.1.1.
Conduct a comprehensive pre-upgrade assessment and discovery of the existing WebLogic, Java, EBS, and custom application environments.
Inventory WebLogic domains, Administration Servers, Managed Servers, clusters, Node Manager configurations, data sources, JMS resources, security configurations, deployments, integrations, and application dependencies.
Assess existing Java/JDK versions and compatibility requirements associated with the WebLogic upgrade.
Inventory custom Java/J2EE applications and identify potential compatibility issues before migration.
Identify deprecated or unsupported Java APIs, WebLogic functionality, frameworks, third-party JARs, libraries, drivers, and other dependencies.
Develop a detailed upgrade and application remediation plan.
Upgrade and configure WebLogic domains and associated middleware components.
Review and update WebLogic startup scripts, JAVA_HOME, CLASSPATH, JAVA_OPTIONS, JVM parameters, and environment-specific configurations.
Analyze and remediate Java application issues resulting from WebLogic and JDK changes.
Troubleshoot application compilation, deployment, startup, runtime, integration, and performance issues.
Review EAR, WAR, and JAR deployments and application build processes.
Work with customer development teams to identify and remediate custom Java code where required.
Troubleshoot classloading, JDBC, JMS, SSL/TLS, authentication, security, JVM, memory, deployment, and integration issues.
Support applications using Spring, Hibernate, REST/SOAP web services, JDBC, JMS, XML, and other Java enterprise technologies, where applicable.
Coordinate with Oracle EBS Apps DBAs, Oracle DBAs, Java developers, infrastructure teams, security teams, and application owners.
Ensure changes are compatible with the customer's supported Oracle EBS architecture.
Develop detailed migration, testing, cutover, rollback, and production implementation plans.
Perform upgrades in development/test environments before promoting changes through QA/UAT and production.
Support functional, integration, regression, performance, and production-readiness testing.
Troubleshoot complex post-upgrade middleware and application issues.
Document configurations, technical findings, remediation requirements, upgrade procedures, and operational recommendations.
Provide knowledge transfer and post-production support to customer technical teams.

Required Qualifications & Technical Skills

The successful candidate should have:

8+ years of hands-on Oracle WebLogic Server administration, engineering, or architecture experience.
Strong experience with Oracle WebLogic Server 12c and 14c.
Demonstrated experience performing enterprise WebLogic version upgrades.
Hands-on experience with WebLogic 12.2.1.4 and WebLogic 14.1.1 strongly preferred.
Strong Java/J2EE/Java EE technical background.
Experience with Java/JDK upgrades and application compatibility analysis.
Ability to troubleshoot and remediate Java applications following middleware and JDK upgrades.
Strong experience with WebLogic domains, clusters, Managed Servers, Administration Servers, and Node Manager.
Experience with JDBC data sources and connection pools.
JMS configuration and troubleshooting experience.
Experience with WebLogic security, SSL/TLS, certificates, and authentication.
Strong JVM configuration and troubleshooting skills, including heap, memory, garbage collection, and performance analysis.
Experience deploying and troubleshooting EAR, WAR, and JAR applications.
Experience with Linux/Unix environments and shell scripting.
Experience with Maven and/or Ant build environments.
Strong application log analysis and root-cause troubleshooting capabilities.
Experience with REST/SOAP web services and enterprise application integrations.

Custom Java Application Remediation Experience

This is a critical requirement for the position.

The consultant must be capable of determining why an application that operates successfully under WebLogic 12.2.1.4 and its existing Java environment may fail, behave differently, or experience performance problems after migration to WebLogic 14.1.1 and a newer JDK environment.

Candidates should have hands-on experience troubleshooting and remediating:

Java/JDK API compatibility issues
Deprecated or removed Java APIs

Classloading and dependency conflicts
JDBC driver compatibility
Spring/Hibernate framework compatibility
XML/JAXB and web-service dependencies

Oracle E-Business Suite Experience

Experience supporting Oracle E-Business Suite environments is highly preferred.

Candidates should understand the relationship between Oracle EBS, WebLogic, Java, Oracle Database, integrations, custom applications, and supporting technology components.

Experience working alongside Oracle EBS Apps DBAs, Oracle DBAs, Java developers, and infrastructure teams during middleware or Java upgrades is strongly preferred.

Ideal Candidate

We are looking for a senior hands-on technical consultant—not simply a WebLogic administrator.

The ideal candidate should be capable of independently assessing a complex enterprise environment, designing the upgrade approach, executing the WebLogic upgrade, and resolving technical problems across the WebLogic, Java/JDK, custom application, Oracle EBS, database, integration, and infrastructure layers.

The consultant should be comfortable working directly with customer technical teams, diagnosing difficult application problems, recommending remediation strategies, and taking ownership of the technical upgrade through successful production deployment.

Candidates who have directly performed WebLogic 12.2.1.4 to 14.1.1 upgrades involving custom Java applications and Oracle E-Business Suite environments will receive strong preference.
